DESIGN STATEMENT

The context of Kew is generally a mixture of residential housing, light industrial regions, commercial shopping areas, schools and parks. Many of the surrounding streets have vegetated nature strips and generously planted footpaths. The proposal for 18-20 Wellington Road, Kew consists of 25 residences. Responding to the surrounding suburban scale, streetscape rhythm and recognising the adjacent reserve.

Particular emphasis has been put into developing off-site amenity that prioritises privacy and usable outdoor space. Balconies have been designed to provided the best outlook and orientation for neighbours whilst delivering adequate privacy within the most sensitive areas of the site. The schemes envelope builds a relationship with Recreation Hall Reserve and carries this language into the amenity throughout the site.

The architectural expression of the scheme follows a principle of adapting the historic context of kew with a restrained modern gesture. Creating a familiar modern aesthetic that compliments the adjacent reserve and adds a vibrant take on Wellington’s streetscape.

The scheme aims to create a unique building that adds to Kew’s developing and diverse architectural language. Using the sites contextual inputs and precedence, the scheme creates practical, liveable layouts paired with plentiful amenity.
